MRS. AMERICA 2016
In 2008, I was involved in a near fatal car accident and was told I would never walk again. I made the decision, at that very moment, to prove all of my doctors wrong, to persevere and to, indeed, walk again. I realized that this was a rare and extraordinary opportunity to prove to others that with hard work, determination, and optimism anything is possible. I had a remarkable story to share with the world and as soon as I recovered, I began sharing my story by speaking in schools on the importance of never giving up on your dreams, no matter what obstacles come your way. In fact, I am living proof of this. In 2010, I won the title of Miss Alabama USA and went on to represent my state at the Miss USA Pageant where I was named 2nd runner up.
Shortly after the pageant, I graduated from the University of Alabama with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and moved to Mobile, Alabama to start my career as a teacher. Teaching has always been my goal even as a little girl. I still remember playing “school” with my younger brother. I adore children, and I love knowing that I am a special part of their lives.
My fiancé, Ryan, was my rock throughout this entire process. After passing along the title of Miss Alabama USA the following year and graduating college, my fiancé and I were approached to compete on the survival television show, “Get Out Alive.” This was yet another opportunity to push myself to overcome great physical obstacles. We accepted this challenge and worked with Bear Grylls in New Zealand “surviving” for an entire month. This was an extremely challenging but very rewarding experience and I can now truly say that I have “gotten out alive” on more than one occasion
Ryan and I were married in July of 2013 and were blessed with a precious baby boy, Kipton Walker Gwin, in July of 2014. My family is the most precious gift I have and will ever receive. I am a firm believer that the absolute greatest gifts do come from above. Shortly after Kip’s birth, I decided to take a leave of absence from teaching and work as a stay-at-home mom.
Being a wife and a mother is wonderful to say the least, and I enjoy every second I spend with my family. I come from a large family full of love, and I plan to expand my own family in the future. My husband and I do almost everything together. We enjoy staying healthy, working out, fishing, horseback riding, and lazy Sunday’s. Sunday is our favorite day out of the week because it is a big family day for us. After attending church and sunday school class, it is our tradition to eat lunch at Cracker Barrel and then head home for a little playtime outside with Kip and Beau (the family dog).
As the new Mrs. Alabama America, I plan to focus on encouraging and inspiring our future generation of young women to stay strong and to never give up on the dreams or goals they have no matter what obstacles come their way. I plan to tell my story, and hopefully empower as many people as I possibly can throughout my year and continue long afterward! Please continue to follow me through my reign, and as I prepare to compete for the title of Mrs. America.
Madeline was crowned Mrs America 2016 and crowned her successor Mrs. Washington, Natalie Luttmer, on August 27, 2016 at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino.
